Well it is 10 am at the time of this writing July 3rd and we have already gotten quite a few calls asking if the local farmer’s market held on Wednesdays is going to be open tomorrow–July 4th.  To quote a farmer’s market manager “the only thing we close for is hurricanes”.  And since there are no hurricanes in the forecast for tomorrow in Northern New York the farmers market will be open for business!

I would encourage you to visit the market, especially if you aren’t normally able to get there because you work during the day.  Last week a friend of mine did a run to the market for me (well she was going for herself, and I asked her to pick up some things for me as well).  Blueberries are in, strawberries are finishing up, unless farmers have ever-bearing varieties that go longer.  Fresh peas are in and salad greens abound.  Radishes, scallions and asparagus should also be waiting for you.  Of course besides the fruits and veggies you can also pick up a wide variety of meat products, baked goods and craft items to round out your shopping experience.

Here is a menu put together by Diane Eggert of the NY Farmers Market Federation.  A great way to celebrate this Year’s Independence Day is to buy local and support your community and farmers.

The 4th of July is a time for Barbecue in New York!

A trip to a local farmers market will find the ingredients for the perfect holiday meal, and with over 450 farmers markets across the state, New Yorkers all across the state can enjoy a locally grown holiday meal.
